Sustained release drug delivery system can be a major advance toward solving the problem concerning drugs have a short half-life are eliminated quickly from blood circulation require frequent dosing. To avoid this problem, oral sustained release formulations have been developed in an attempt to release the drug slowly into the g.i.t and maintain a constant drug concentration for long period of time. Purpose of review article is designing sustained release drug delivery system is to reduce the frequency of dosing, reduce the dose and provide uniform drug delivery. Present review article compile various formulation approaches for sustained release drug delivery system such as objectives of SRDDS, disadvantages of conventional dosage form, advantages, factors in designing of SRDDS, drug selection , polymers used, models and comparison of dissolution profile , characterization of sustained release tablets.
